Preview of the 2016 Rostelecom Cup

 

2016rostelecomcupThe ISU Grand Prix series continues this week in Moscow, Russia with the Rostelecom Cup. This is the third stop on the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series.

The schedule:

  • Friday, November 4: Short Dance (14:45), Men’s (16:25), Pairs (19:00) and Ladies (20:40) Short Program
  • Saturday, November 5: Free Dance (14:00), Men’s (15:50), Pairs (18:05) and Ladies (19:50) Free Skating
  • Sunday, November 6: Exhibition Gala

Competition highlights:

Two-time and reigning World Champion Javier Fernandez (ESP) will headline the Men’s event. Shoma Uno (JPN), who won Progressive Skate America two weeks ago, will look to secure his spot in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final. Other contenders include Mikhail Kolyada (RUS), Alexei Bychenko (ISR), Max Aaron (USA), Deniss Vasiljevs (LAT) and Elladj Balde (CAN).

In the Ladies event, the Russians look to sweep the podium with Anna Pogorilaya, Elena Radionova and Julia Lipnitskaya. Other contenders include Zijun Li (CHN), Courtney Hicks (USA) and Kanako Murakami (JPN). Canada does not have an entry at this event.

World bronze medalists Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot (GER) will compete for the first time in the Grand Prix series. Julianne Seguin and Charlie Bilodeau (CAN) are aiming for the top spot following their gold medal win at Skate America. Others hoping for a podium finish including Kristina Astakhova and Alexei Rogonov (RUS), Natalia Zabiiako and Alexander Enbert (RUS), and Valentina Marchei and Ondrej Hotarek (ITA). Camille Ruest and Drew Wolfe (CAN) make their Grand Prix debut following placing fourth at the 2016 Autumn Classic International, their first international assignment together.

The Ice Dance event will definitely be interesting as Madison Chock and Evan Bates (USA) look to build on their silver medal from Skate Canada International last week and Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev (RUS) look to improve their bronze medal from Skate America. The 2015 World bronze medalists Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje (CAN) are also in the mix as they make their Grand Prix season debut. Other competitors include Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri (ITA), Tiffany Zahorski and Jonathan Guerreiro (RUS) and Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Nikolaj Sorensen (DEN).
