Yuzuru Hanyu (JPN) underwent abdominal surgery on December 30 and will remain hospitalized for two weeks, followed by a month-long period of rest.

The 20 year old complained of stomach pain after his GPF victory in Barcelona and returned home to Tokyo on December 16 for further medical consultation.

“I have felt some pain since the Grand Prix Final and spoke to my doctor about it,” Hanyu said in a statement on Tuesday. “I was advised to have an examination to determine the extent of the problem.”

The Japanese Skating Federation confirmed that the Olympic and World Champion had surgery on Tuesday for what was medically confirmed as an urachal remnant.

Hanyu hopes to recover in time to defend his World championship title in March.
