JAPANESE SKATING NEWS

TATSUKI MACHIDA RETIRES

The reigning World silver medalist has hung up his skates and will attend graduate school to pursue a Master’s Degree. The surprise announcement came following his 4th place finish at the Japanese Nationals in Nagano on December 28, 2014. Machida held the record for the highest points in the GP Series at Skate America (269.09) until Yuzuru Hanyu scored 288.16 at the Final in Barcelona, Spain.

 

2014-15 JAPANESE NATIONALS

MEN:

  1. YUZURU HANYU, reigning GPF, World, and Olympic Champion out distanced his closest competitor by 35 points with a powerfully technical program that broke 100. (286.86)
  2. SHOMO UNO, 2014, 2014 Junior GPF gold medalist opened with a quad and followed with seven clean triples to win silver.
  3. TAKAHIKO KOZUKA rallied from 6th in the short with a 2nd place free skate to defend his 2013-14 Japanese Nationals bronze medal.
  4. TATSUKI MACHIDA, reining World silver medalist landed a quad, then had difficulty with his other jumping passes and spins. He dropped from 2nd in the short to 5th in the free.
  5. TAKAHITO MURA, 2014 Skate Canada gold medalist, earned 47.78 points for his quads and axels and placed 4th in the free.

LADIES:

  1. SATOKO MIYAHARA, reigning Four Continents silver medalist landed five clean triples, a 3Lz+2T+2Lo and all Level4 spins.
  2. RIKA HONGO, 2014 Rostelecom Cup gold medalist slipped to 2nd with several under rotated jumps. Her spins were all Level4.
  3. WAKABA HIGUCHI, 2014 GPF bronze medalist who turns fourteen on Jan 2 botched the opening 3Lz+3T, but then completed four clean triples.
  4. YUKA NAGAI, 2014 JGP Nagoya TV Cup silver medalist opened with 3L+3T and 3Lz+2T for almost 20 points for a 5th place free skate.
  5. KANAKO MURAKAMI, reigning Four Continents champion was 9th after the short program, but vaulted to 5th with a 4th place free program. She under rotated five jumps, but earned Level4 on two spins.

PAIRS:

NARAMI TAKAHASHI+RYUICHI KIHARA earned 150.94 points.

ICE DANCE:

  1. CATHY REED+CHRIS REED – 80 points
  2. EMI HIRAI+MARIEN DE LA ASUNCION – 80 points
