Skate Today

Cheng Peng+Hao Zhang won gold, followed by Xiaoyu Yu+Yang Jin with silver, and Xuchan Wang+Lei Wang earned bronze.

“Today is a festive day for us.  It has been a long time since the Chinese pairs swept the podium.  We did it at the 2003 Four Continents’ Championships. To do it again after all those years makes me very proud for all of us,” smiled Zhang

Peng+Zhang opened with a huge quad twist earning 9.74 points.  The recent Skate America bronze medalists received Level4 for their lifts and Pair Combination spin, but struggled with their jumps and earned fewer points for them than the base value.

Yu+Jin moved from 3rd to 2nd after the free program. The opening

s-b-s jumps, Level4 triple twist and 3LoTh were spot on. The 2014 Junior World champions had a mishap with the reverse lasso lift when Jin dropped Yu. The “Humility and Love’ program earned a personal best 116.30 score.  The total was 173.33

“Last season we won the Junior GPF, and now we won our first medal on the senior Grand Prix.  There are many things we can improve, and hopefully we can do that in our next event in Japan,” said Yu.

Wang+Wang struggled with their jumps, but the lifts all earned Level4.

“This is our first (international) medal, and we are very excited about that, but I want to do better next time,” noted Xuehan Wang.

Vera Bazarova+Andrei Deputat (RUS) made their international debut as a new team.  The partners, who teamed up after the Sochi Olympics, struggled with the s-b-s jumps in both programs. The free program lifts and combination spin earned Level4.

The Cup of China pairs will next compete at the following:

Yu+Jin – NHK Trophy

Wang+Wang – Trophee Bompard

Bazarova+Deputat – NHK Trophy

Calalang+Sidhu – Rostelecom Cup
