Javier Fernandez, of Spain, won his first gold medal in international competition after delivering a charming, technically sound free program to a Charlie Chaplin medley. The program included a quadruple salchow and a quadruple toe-loop, double toe-loop combination. He scored 168.07 in the free program.

“I have practised this program a lot. I will keep working on it” said Fernandez.

His next event is NHK in Japan.

Patrick Chan, two-time World Champion, of Canada was not able to come back in the free to win the gold medal as he did a year ago. He had problems on his quadruple toe-loop and under-rotated his triple axel. One of the highlights of his free program, skated to La Boheme, was a quadruple toe-loop, double toe-loop combination. He scored 160.91 in the free program.

“I felt comfortable out there on the ice. I came into this competition with hesitation but now I am back. I am looking forward to the Cup of Russia” said Chan.

Nobunari Oda, of Japan, skated his free program to The Sorcerers Apprentice and nailed a beautiful triple axel. His triple flip was under-rotated and he received an edge call on his triple lutz, triple toe-loop combination. He scored 156.20 in the free program.

“I am really happy winning a medal. I made a few mistakes” said Oda.
