Skate Today

Javier Fernandez delivered at Skate Canada International in the short program and was the leader after the men’s short program for the second consecutive year. The music selected for his short program for the 2012-2013 skating season was “The Mask of Zorro” soundtrack by James Horner. Javier’s only major mistake in the program was taking off on the wrong edge on his triple lutz, triple-triple toe combination. He received a score of 85.87.

“I am really happy. I am going to push hard tomorrow.” Fernandez said.

Two-time World Champion, Patrick Chan, who now trains with Kathy Johnson and Eddie Shipstad, missed his opening planned element, a quadruple toe-loop, triple toe-loop combination and did a triple-toe loop, triple-toe loop combination. He also earned a score of 85.52 and was second heading into the free skate.

“I delivered quality skating despite my mistakes” Chan said. He earned the top program component score of the men’s short at Skate Canada.

Nobunari Oda, a 6-time national medalist, nailed an exquisite quadruple toe-loop, triple-toe loop combination to open his short. He stumbled on his triple axel but came back with a triple flip.

Denis Ten of Kazakhstan and Florent Amodio stood fourth and fifth, respectively, after the short.
