Olympic Qualifier Boasts Star-Studded Field

The 2009/2010 Olympic season should kick off with a bang as a star-studded field head to the quaint German town of Oberstdorf during the week of September 24-27, 2009. The Nebelhorn Trophy has been designated as the Olympic Qualifying Event for countries who have yet to secure spots for the upcoming Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada.

In addition to those countries trying to qualify spots other nations are utilizing the event to showcase their top skaters who wish to gain valuable experience, feedback, and points toward their World Standings.

The men’s event should be especially exciting and will be highlighted by the return of 2006 Olympic silver medalist Stephane Lambiel and 2003 World bronze medalist Stefan Lindemann. Lambiel returns from retirement and Lindemann has been out several seasons due to injury. The two will be joined by American silver medalist Brandon Mroz who finished ninth at the 2009 World Championships in Los Angeles. Making his debut skating for Azerbaijan Fedor Andreev is hoping to claim his first trip to the Olympic Games. NHK bronze medalist Yannick Ponsero will lead the French and Junior World silver medalist Michal Brezina begins his quest for the Czech Republic.

In the ladies’ event Japan’s Fumie Suguri will headline for Team Japan and will go up against 2008 Junior World Champion Rachael Flatt. Flatt had an outstanding debut at the senior level finishing fifth in her first World Championships. They should face strong challenges from 2008 European silver medalist Sarah Meier, American Champion Alissa Czisny and 2007 European bronze medalist Kiira Korpi who is returning after injury.

There is little question that two-time World Champions Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy should be the class of the field in the pair’s event, however, should they falter, training mates Tatiana Volosozhar and Stanislav Morozov of the Ukraine could pose a threat. Canadians Anabelle Langlois and Cody Hay are back on the ice after missing the 2008/2009 season due to injury, and should fight it out with American silver medalists Caydee Denny and Jeremy Barrett. Denny and Barrett placed ninth in their World Championship debut last March. 2007 American Champions Brooke Castile and Benjamin Okolski return injury free and could prove to be the dark horse in the event along with 2008 Junior World Champions Ksenia Krasilnikova and Konstantin Bezmaternikh of Russia.

In dance, Grand Prix bronze medalists Meryl Davis and Charlie White caused quite a stir when they placed fourth at the World Championships in March. The duo should battle it out with Nathalie Pechalat and Fabian Bourzat who was nipping at their heels in Los Angeles where they placed fifth.

Skate Today plans to be on hand and will post reports of all events. Stay tuned.
